ConnectAID’s Field Reporter Explores Conservation Efforts in Zambia https://connectaid.org/impact-story/fieldreportzambia/ https://connectaid.org/impact-story/fieldreportzambia/#respond Thu, 02 Nov 2023 13:57:34 +0000 https://connectaid.org/?p=2648 A Field Mission into the Heart of Wildlife Conservation

ConnectAID’s commitment to supporting sustainable development initiatives spans the globe. Our latest venture took us to the breathtaking landscapes of Zambia, where we teamed up with our dedicated field reporter, Dylan Raines, for an immersive experience.

Empowering through Education

Our journey in Zambia focused on partnering with the Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust. This nonprofit organization, founded by Anna Tolan, is on a mission to “give children hope and wildlife a chance.” Through innovative education programs, wildlife rehabilitation, and community engagement, Chipembele is nurturing the next generation of conservationists.

A Safari of Inspiration

Dylan had the privilege of embarking on a wildlife safari with local children, sharing in their awe and excitement as they encountered the wonders of the animal kingdom. These moments of discovery are the building blocks of a future where conservation becomes second nature.

Anna Tolan: A Champion of Conservation

During our journey, Dylan had the opportunity to interview Anna Tolan, the passionate CEO of Chipembele. Anna’s life is a testament to the power of dedication and education in the field of wildlife conservation. Her tireless efforts are inspiring the next generation to take up the mantle of protecting our planet’s biodiversity.

Amplifying Voices for Change

As we return from our journey, we’re reminded that change happens when we connect hearts, dreams, and actions. Our collaboration with Chipembele and other like-minded organizations is a testament to the transformative impact we can achieve together.

Transforming Lives in Pushkar: ConnectAID’s Impact https://connectaid.org/impact-story/empowering-dreams-in-rajastan-connectaids-transformative-journey/ https://connectaid.org/impact-story/empowering-dreams-in-rajastan-connectaids-transformative-journey/#respond Tue, 26 Sep 2023 12:28:16 +0000 https://connectaid.org/?p=2596 In the heart of Rajasthan, India, ConnectAID embarked on a transformative journey that would touch the lives of children living in a remote Gypsy community, nestled amidst the expansive desert of Pushkar. Our recent visit to The Blue House Project was a testament to the power of collaboration, resilience, and hope. This time, our Founder Gaelle Mogli returned to the community with special guests – her own family as well as 9 years old Nakshatra Prem, one of ConnectAID’s youth Ambassadors.

The Blue House project in Pushkar

Founded by the young girl Jaira Chin seven years ago, The Blue House Project, one of ConnectAID’s NGO Members sponsored by Peonia, has been a sanctuary for Gypsy children living in the desert camps of Pushkar. These children, often overlooked by society, face unimaginable challenges. Living conditions are harsh, with rats being a constant presence, and access to education is limited. The Blue House has been a safe place for many children at the camp, offering not just a place to rest, play and learn, but also a chance at a better future.

Nakshatra Prem: A Youth Ambassador Inspiring Change

Accompanying us on this transformative journey was Nakshatra Prem, our SDG Youth Ambassador. At just nine years old, Nakshatra embodies the spirit of youth activism and empowerment. Her presence added a touch of inspiration to our mission as she shared a chapter from her book on sustainable development with the children. Nakshatra’s passion and dedication to creating positive change through education left an indelible mark on all of us.

Creating Sustainable Change Together

Our journey in India was not just about providing immediate relief but also about creating sustainable change. We distributed essential school supplies and clothing, brightening the lives of these incredible children. Moreover, we’ve committed to supporting their education, breaking the cycle of poverty, and giving them the tools they need to build brighter futures.

ConnectAID believes that real change happens when individuals, nonprofits, families, and communities come together to uplift one another. The journey in Pushkar exemplified our commitment to this belief. We are proud to stand by our Member The Blue House Project and the Gypsy children of Pushkar, and we are determined to continue making a positive impact in their lives.

Our journey in Pushkar may have been a chapter, but the story of change and hope continues. Together, with partners like The Blue House and inspiring youth like Nakshatra Prem, we are creating a brighter and more equitable world for some of the poorest children of our planet.

Join us on this remarkable journey, and together, we’ll keep making dreams come true in places like Pushkar and beyond.

Anna Tolan: Inspiring Hope for Wildlife Conservation in Zambia https://connectaid.org/impact-story/anna/ https://connectaid.org/impact-story/anna/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2023 15:04:18 +0000 https://connectaid.org/?p=2582 In the heart of eastern Zambia, there is a remarkable woman named Anna Tolan, who is dedicated to giving children hope and wildlife a chance. As the co-founder and director of Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust, Anna has dedicated her life to teaching Zambian children the value of wildlife and the importance of protecting their environment. Her journey from being a police officer in Oxford, UK, to becoming a passionate conservationist in Zambia is a testament to her unwavering commitment to making a difference. ConnectAID proudly met with the Founder of Chipembele during our field mission to Zambia in September 2023, and can testify about the organization’s enormous impact on the ground. But let’s talk about Anna!

Together with her husband Steve Tolan, Anna established Chipembele in 1998, armed with nothing but their boundless passion and determination to educate children and communities living near the South Luangwa National Park. Their transition from police officers to conservationists was a significant change, but Anna’s love for Africa and the pressing threats to its wildlife and habitats propelled them forward.

Anna’s work at Chipembele has been nothing short of extraordinary. She has spearheaded pupil sponsorship schemes for orphaned and vulnerable children, ensuring they receive an education that they might not have otherwise been able to afford. Moreover, she has managed numerous school improvement projects, focusing on enhancing educational facilities and opportunities for the local youth.

At the core of Anna’s mission is the conservation education outreach program she established at 28 local schools. Through this program, children are inspired to consider careers in the world of conservation and are taught about the immense value in preserving wildlife. Anna’s dedication to nurturing the passion and commitment of the youth in her conservation programs serves as a constant source of inspiration and energy for her.

Beyond education, Anna leads by example. Chipembele also takes in orphaned animals, providing them with care and rehabilitation until they are ready to be released back into the wild. Anna’s devotion to these animals is such that she and her husband have not been able to go away together for the past decade, as one of them always stays behind to care for the animals. This sacrifice exemplifies their deep commitment to the well-being of wildlife.

For Anna, education is the key to securing the future of wildlife in Africa. She envisions a world where people and wildlife can coexist harmoniously, despite the challenges of population growth and development. By educating communities about the value and benefits of wildlife conservation and providing practical solutions to conflicts, Anna believes that a harmonious relationship between humans and wildlife can be achieved.

Anna Tolan in Zambia

Anna’s story is one of passion, resilience, and unwavering determination. Her tireless efforts to educate children and communities about the importance of wildlife conservation have undoubtedly made a lasting impact. Through Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust, she has brought hope to countless children, inspired future conservationists, and contributed significantly to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 13: Life on Land.

Anna Tolan’s career is a testament to the transformative power of education and the indomitable human spirit. ConnectAID is proud of its NGO Member Chipembele and witnessed first hand its impact during our latest field mission to Zambia. As we admire Anna Tolan’s dedication and accomplishments, we can all be inspired to take action in our own lives to protect and preserve our precious natural world. Together, we can ensure a future where wildlife thrives, and humans live in harmony with nature.

Breaking Barriers in the Desert of Pushkar, India https://connectaid.org/find-your-cause/breaking-barriers-in-the-desert/ https://connectaid.org/find-your-cause/breaking-barriers-in-the-desert/#respond Tue, 30 May 2023 15:40:43 +0000 https://connectaid.org/?p=2328 ConnectAID’s Nonprofit Member, The Blue House, is making a remarkable difference in the lives of disadvantaged families living in the harsh desert of Pushkar, Rajasthan, India. Through its holistic approach, encompassing education, employment, and fulfilling basic life needs, The Blue House is breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty and offering hope for a better future.

Education lies at the heart of The Blue House Project, recognizing its transformative power in shaping a child’s life and future. With a strong belief in inclusivity, the project takes two important steps to ensure education reaches even the most impoverished children. Firstly, they send 70 children from disadvantaged families to the local APS school, providing them with the opportunity to learn and grow in a formal education setting. Secondly, The Blue House offers after-school tuition, creating a supportive environment that nurtures the students’ academic development.

Little indian girl in front of a blue house. However, the challenges faced by the families of these school children extend far beyond the classroom. Many of them live in absolute poverty, lacking proper shelter, income, and sufficient food. Recognizing these pressing needs, The Blue House Project extends its support to cover the fundamental necessities of life. Monthly food supplies, housing assistance, gas stoves, healthcare, clothing, and water tanks are provided to these families, easing their burdens and allowing them to focus on their children’s education. These crucial expenses are funded through generous donations from supporters.

One of the most impactful initiatives of The Blue House is their employment program, which empowers parents and helps them become self-sufficient. The majority of the parents in the program come from lower castes and work as musicians and cleaners, often being forced to send their children begging. By providing employment opportunities, The Blue House offers an alternative path, enabling parents to support their families with dignity. The organization sells the hand-stitched products made by these parents through their website and various European shops, ensuring that 100% of the profit goes directly to the women who crafted them.

Nakshatra Prem, ConnectAID Youth VoiceThe heartwarming actions of ConnectAID’s Youth Voice, 9 years old Nakshatra Prem, further exemplify the spirit of solidarity and compassion. Nakshatra Prem, author of the book “For Our Planet: A book on SDGs through stories,” reached out to ConnectAID to contribute to its Member’s noble cause, as part of STARKID kindness movement. Recognizing the dire conditions faced by the community living in the desert, Nakshatra Prem donated 50 waterproof tents to provide much-needed shelter. Moreover, her support which will directly come from the sells of her book extends to the education of several children within the community and empowering women through the provision of sewing machines, aligning with The Blue House’s ongoing women empowerment project.

The impact of The Blue House Project cannot be overstated. Through their collective efforts, they have succeeded in sending 70 children from low-caste families, living in tents in the desert of Pushkar, to school. These children, who previously lacked access to education, are now given the chance to learn, grow, and break free from the shackles of poverty. The generosity of sponsors like Nakshatra Prem, who fund school fees, books, and uniforms, plays a vital role in expanding the reach of this educational opportunity.

Every person who chooses to sponsor a child’s education through The Blue House Project is directly contributing to the transformation of a life. Each sponsorship ensures that another child can access the education they deserve, bringing us one step closer to a more equitable society. Through their tireless efforts, ConnectAID’s Nonprofit Member, The Blue House, is fostering a brighter future for the gypsy community living in the desert, one filled with hope, education, and empowerment.

How a 7-Year-Old Drug Addict Became an Artist, Thanks to FXB India Suraksha https://connectaid.org/interviews/impact-on-real-lives-how-a-7-year-old-drug-addict-became-an-artist-thanks-to-fxb-india-suraksha/ https://connectaid.org/interviews/impact-on-real-lives-how-a-7-year-old-drug-addict-became-an-artist-thanks-to-fxb-india-suraksha/#respond Tue, 23 May 2023 15:16:15 +0000 https://connectaid.org/?p=1317 Ramzan Bhaiyya used to be known as one of Jaipur’s “railway children.” He was living on the streets, near the train station, among scores of young kids who either beg – with almost no clothes on, and little food in their stomach – or collect and sell used plastic bottles. Most of them suffer from drug addiction, from sniffing glue or anything else they can find. They’re vulnerable to disease, violence, sexual and emotional abuse, though no one seems to care. No one, except for a non-profit organization named FXB India Suraksha, or FXBIS.

Back in 2009, FXBIS social workers met with Ramzan, who was then just 7 years old – and already addicted to sniffing glue. They invited him to their Day Care center: a place where he could rest, eat, study, recover from drugs, and get back on his feet. Rather than ignore them, Ramzan chose to follow the social workers. Day by day, his life would be “saved.” Today, he’s a self-sustained artist who also teaches art to street children at the same Day Care center that rescued him.

ConnectAID’s Field Reporters recently met with Ramzan, now 21, to learn how one NGO can change someone’s life for the good – and has even enabled him to dream big about his future.

“When I was 7, I was saved by FXB,” he explained to a ConnectAID Field Reporter, Arushi Tangri. “Today, I give back by teaching kids how to draw. I also create my own art on the side. I want to become an internationally recognized artist and explore the creativity inside me.”

Ramzan is not alone. He’s one of 300 children whom FXBIS social workers have saved over the years, by pulling them off the street, educating them and giving them a chance at a better future. Through their Day Care center – which is run by Director Mamta Borgoyary – the NGO continues to provide hundreds of children with shelter, food, access to counselling services, basic healthcare, educational support, recreation and many other needed support services. Ramzan himself has evolved into a symbol of courage and determination for today’s children; listening to his stories, they’re inspired by his efforts and want to become just like him.

“Every year, thousands more children live on the streets: unsafe, uncared for and denied the basic human rights of food, shelter and education,” says Borgoyary, who participated in the foundation of the NGO program in 2007. “These children grow up trapped in the vicious cycle of poverty and deprivation. Ramzan is a true example of how a nurturing environment can completely transform lives of children and help them emerge as a beacon of light. It is our endeavour to provide that environment to such vulnerable children, to not only educate and nurture them but also help them positively impact other such vulnerable lives.”

Ramzan’s story is typical, in many ways. He was born in a small town in the eastern part of India. Due to poverty, he was forced to quit school and ran away, finding himself homeless at Jaipur’s main railway station. His mother and three siblings joined him in the city; they barely made a living through scavenging for used water bottles from the railway tracks, then selling them to recyclers. Drugs enabled him to ignore the cold at night and to fall asleep, he explained.

“Like any other child of the slum near the railway station, I was involved with picking plastic bottles and different kinds of plastic wastes from the train tracks. After which, we would use the money to buy drugs,” says the young artist. “My friends used to push me to consume drugs, after which I’d lose consciousness – and also track of time.”

Ramzan explained that children start by consuming alcohol and beedis (a local Indian cigarette), then switch to harder drugs available in the slums. These kinds of drugs can be fatal. He says he saw several children younger than 18 lose their lives due to these drugs, including sniffing harmful chemicals such as a lubricant used as adhesive for tube-tires in cars. The children not only grow addicted, but lose their mental ability to think clearly. Ramzan’s brother lost one leg while on drugs.

When FXBIS first took him onboard, Ramzan was shy, traumatised and scared of the sexual and physical abuses he had suffered while living on the streets. He preferred to sit in a corner and draw. The non-profit worked with him slowly, with patience and encouragement. He came to the center every day to take a bath, eat proper food and just relax with his drawing book and pencil.

Gradually, he became more and more comfortable at the center and started participating in educational classes. His leadership skills emerged and he started taking care of other children. He’d also speak out against the exploitation and abuse of children. Having himself battled through the pain, anxiety and trauma, Ramzan is today considered “one of them” by the other kids.

After describing his dreadful past, Ramzan narrated how it took him around three years after joining the center to overcome his addiction to drugs and toxic substances. After helping treat his addiction, the non-profit connected him with a professional artist, for whom he served three years as a trainee. Today, he not only teaches art twice a week to the street children, he also works as a helper by cooking meals for them. Ramzan explains how poverty pushes these young children to leave school, fend for their families from a young age, and end up falling into the trap of drug addiction – with a bleak future.

That’s why he’s so grateful to the FXBIS staff for rescuing him. Especially Mamta Borgoyary. While at the center, ConnectAID witnessed an emotional moment when the young artist offered Borgoyary a portrait of her and her mother, which he himself had painted. He explained that it was his way to say “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.” With tears in her eyes, she accepted his gift.

ConnectAID’s Field Reporter asked Ramzan what he now wants to do to help other street children who live the life he used to. He’ll continue to help children in the Day Care Center to overcome trauma through art. He’s also begun to sell his drawings online. Furthermore, he is also instrumental in outreach and advocacy, giving a voice to the voiceless, forgotten children.

“I want to earn a lot of money and help these kids get an education,” says Ramzan. “So that they can provide a basic standard of living for their families, who still struggle in extreme poverty.”

Tracking Impact on Poverty in India: One NGO’s Story at a Time https://connectaid.org/find-your-cause/tracking-impact-on-poverty-in-india-one-ngos-story-at-a-time/ https://connectaid.org/find-your-cause/tracking-impact-on-poverty-in-india-one-ngos-story-at-a-time/#respond Thu, 30 Mar 2023 10:56:56 +0000 https://connectaid.org/?p=1324 In August 2022, ConnectAID, the International Solidarity Network, sent a humanitarian team to India to check on and report on several of its NGO Members. One of these was FXB India Suraksha’s project with homeless children living near the train station in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Our team met with Mamta Borgoyary, Head of FXB India Suraksha, a woman who devotes her life to helping others and making a difference. The following is a true story of a wonderful organization saving the lives of some of the most vulnerable children in the world.

Every five minutes, a child arrives at a railway platform in India, all alone and vulnerable. Many of them are running away from poverty, abuse, and neglect. Just imagine a child hitching rides on overcrowded trains to big cities such as Jaipur, hoping to find a better life. Then picking through garbage in hopes of finding something to earn a few rupees for food. They are easy prey for child trafficking and exploitation. One of their only hopes is to be rescued by a nonprofit organization like the one Mamta Borgoyary runs in India.

FXB India Suraksha is an NGO working in 14 states in India, supporting the most vulnerable women and children. One of their projects includes a Day Care Center for street children in Jaipur, where 300 children have already been positively impacted, and 250 others have successfully returned to school thanks to FXB India Suraksha. This little haven on earth, which started in 2007, is a testament to the profound compassion with which Ms. Borgoyary and her team have helped some of the poorest children in the world.

When ConnectAID’s team toured the FXB Day Care Center and spoke with Mamta Borgoyary, what impacted them most was her story of heart-centered commitment to impacting children’s physiological and safety needs, their need for food, a safe shelter to rest, education, and recognition. “The center is essentially providing a home for the homeless children,” she said. “A physical space to sleep, eat, rest and learn. A place where they can just be themselves.”

Every day, Borgoyary’s team takes a rickshaw to the railway station to speak to the children and invite them to the daycare center. “The idea was twofold: find ways to make their lives safe…and find ways to allow them to enjoy the innocence that every child has a right to. We also nurture them so they can have a better life,” she said.

From their research and community engagement, FXB India Suraksha has now expanded its impact to influence the slum areas around the railway platform to “encourage meaningful change for the children”. They also meet with parents and schools to create a shared sense of belonging and purpose.

The idea is to ensure long-term impact by advocating with the community to ensure the children return to school with a sense of esteem while discovering a creative purpose. Mamta Borgoyary said the Day Care Center started with just offering informal education but has since evolved to teaching literacy lessons and mathematics. The children also learn about self-expression through painting, dance, and creative arts; this especially helps those who suffer from traumas or drug addictions.

“There are gems in these children, and they need to be nurtured to develop their skills,” said Borgoyary. “Change does not happen right away. This is a long-term impact, and it took ‘years and years’ to build trust with the parents and develop a relationship.”

Today, Mamta Borgoyary and her team of teachers and social workers offer after-school tutoring sessions to ensure the children continue learning and finish their education. The time spent developing relationships with the schools has increased awareness of the cognitive concerns for children who drop out and and has allowed school administrations to expand their perspective on the needs of these children, thus providing better support and education for them.

Revolutionizing Climate Action: WGIC’s Award-Winning Efforts in Geospatial Knowledge Exchange https://connectaid.org/impact-story/revolutionizing-climate-action-wgics-award-winning-efforts-in-geospatial-knowledge-exchange/ https://connectaid.org/impact-story/revolutionizing-climate-action-wgics-award-winning-efforts-in-geospatial-knowledge-exchange/#respond Sun, 30 Oct 2022 12:11:15 +0000 https://connectaid.org/?p=1359 In 2022, ConnectAID nominated one of its NGO members, the World Geospatial Industry Council (WGIC), for the annual Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development, awarded by the Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND). The prize recognizes and honors organizations that have made outstanding contributions to sustainable human development.

Thanks to the innovative work that WGIC has been doing in the field of climate action, they were awarded the prestigious prize, which came with a grant of $200,000 to support their efforts, which is annual renewable. This grant will enable the organization to continue and expand their important work towards mitigating the impacts of climate change, including the monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions through satellite-based observations.

The WGIC was founded in 2018 as a non-profit organization focused on promoting the geospatial industry for sustainable development. Their members are made up of more than 30 private companies from around the world, with expertise in geospatial technologies and a shared commitment to climate action.

The WGIC’s work is centered on the use of geospatial technologies to support sustainable development, and in particular, to address the challenges of climate change. Geospatial technologies involve the use of satellite-based data, mapping, and other tools to capture and analyze information about the earth and its environment. The WGIC believes that these technologies are essential for understanding and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

One of the key areas of focus for the WGIC is the use of geospatial technologies to monitor greenhouse gas emissions. As the world strives to reduce carbon emissions and meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, it is essential to have accurate data on greenhouse gas emissions. The WGIC’s work in this area involves identifying and analyzing the capabilities of different satellite missions to measure greenhouse gas emissions, and using this information to support the development of climate policies and programs. In addition to their work on greenhouse gas emissions, the WGIC is involved in a range of other initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development. For example, they are working to support the use of geospatial technologies to monitor and manage water resources, to improve food security, and to promote biodiversity conservation.

Overall, the WGIC’s work is playing a crucial role in advancing our understanding of the impacts of climate change, and in supporting the development of policies and programs to mitigate those impacts. Their recognition through the AGFUND Prize is a testament to the importance of their work, and a reflection of the urgent need for action to address the challenges of climate change.
